With Sparkling Blue Waters, There’s Nothing Better Than A Visit To Hawaii’s Underrated Mahukona Beach

Mahukona Beach

Megan Shute for Only In Your State on Mahukona Beach on the Big Island.  There’s nothing better than to join us on the Hoku Nui for a snorkel or manta ray tour in the sparkling blue waters of the Kona Coast.

There is absolutely no doubt about it: the beautiful Hawaiian Islands are home to some of the world’s best beaches. And while we are elated to visit the many incredible beaches and best swimming holes in the Aloha State, there are some beaches with sparkling blue waters that are a cut above the rest — including this underrated gem along the coast of the Big Island.

Tucked away on the northwestern tip of Hawaii Island just north of Lapakahi State Historical Park, Mahukona Beach is one of the most unique coastal destinations in the state.

Though called a beach, Mahukona Beach isn’t actually a beach, but an old harbor once used by a local sugar company.

Long after the harbor fell into disuse, the sparkling blue waters of Mahukona became a phenomenal snorkel and dive site, with access to the ocean marked by gently sloping steps.

The water here is generally calm, clear, and as captivating as can be.

Abundant sea life is found in the bay’s coral reefs, and abandoned mill equipment and an old shipwreck make the underwater experience all the more incredible.

Mahukona can experience rough waves in the winter months, and when this happens, it’s best to stay out of the water, as the rocky shoreline can be difficult to navigate.
While Mahukona Beach isn’t your typical Hawaiian paradise, it sure is enticing, so what are you waiting for?
