There is a little-known overlook in Hawaii that you need to hike! This ten-mile hike in Volcanoes National Park is rarely visited but boasts incredible views. Check out Hilina Pali Overlook the next time you’re exploring the Big Island. You won’t be disappointed!
If you’re on the Big Island and visiting Volcanoes National Park, the Hilina Pali Overlook is a wonderful place to stop.
One of the lesser-known overlook trails in the Hawaiian islands, it nonetheless offers stunning views of the ocean beyond.
The entire trail is paved.
In fact, during parts of the year the trail is open to car traffic, too. But if you visit when you can’t drive down to the overlook, walking this easy trail is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.
The trail is 10.2 miles long, out and back.
It is perfect for walking, mountain biking, or even pushing a stroller. The paved trail makes access a lot easier.
The entire elevation gain throughout your hike is around 1,112 ft.
It’s worth it though because the views of the 650-year-old lava fields are absolutely stunning. The lava has turned red from the iron exposure to the air and water over time.
It’s also a fantastic place for birdwatching.
There’s not a lot of shade, so bring a hat and a water bottle with you to keep hydrated.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park does charge a fee to enter. Prices are per vehicle or motorcycle. If you are entering on foot or bike, the fee is charged per person. Or you can purchase a park-specific annual pass if you will be back frequently!

The easy, paved trail is a dream to hike, especially if the road isn’t open. And the views at the end are worth it!
