Spinner Dolphins on the Big Island

Spinner Dolphins under the surface of the water

Spinner Dolphins are a delightful part of the Kona Coast and can be often be seen on your way to a snorkel tour on the Hoku Nui.  April to May and August to November are peak times to see the spinner dolphins.  It’s important to give them some leeway.  There is a new law in Hawaii that prohibits being within 50 yards of a dolphin whether swimming or in a vessel.  Getting any closer, according to the Marine Mammal Protection Act can be considered “harrassment” as it can disrupt their natural behavior.  Luckily,  it’s easy to see them jumping out of the water from quite a good distance!
