Beautiful Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Kailua Kona coastline

According to Britannica, the West Coast of Hawaii is called Kona with Kailua as it’s largest town.  Kailua-Kona also distinguishes itself from the town of Kailua on the island of Oahu.

Kailua-Kona is at the foot of the Hualalai Volcano which last erupted in 1801 and was the site of early contacts between Hawaiians and Europeans including the famous navigator, Captain Cook.

Kailua-kona is also famous as the residence of King Kamehameha I who was believed to be born to Hawaiian Royalty in Ainakea, Kohala.  He was hidden away from Hawaiian warring clans in Waipio Valley and was raised as a warrior and known for his incredible physical strength.

Kamehameha’s birthname was Pai’ea but later named Kamehameha (The Lonely One).  During these early years, King Kamehameha united the islands through a civil war using weapons and advisors from the West.  His rule as King of all the Hawaiian Islands started in 1810.

Today Kailua Kona is also famous for coffee and big game fishing as well as a beautiful resort area that is known as a favorite tourist spot.

The best way to see Kona is from onboard the Hoku Nui sailing out to your snorkel or manta ray tour.  The best snorkel experience in Hawaii!
