After a two-year hiatus, the grueling 140.6-mile triathlon returned to the Big Island in an expanded two-day race format with women competing on Thursday and men taking to the course on Saturday.

Twenty-three men and 15 women from across the Big Island competed in the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. Out of the local racers, Daniel Hartong, 36, of Hilo, and Mele DeMille 41, of Waikōloa, were the top finishers. Hartong completed the triathlon 10 hours, 27 minutes, 46 seconds and DeMille finished in 11 hours, 15 minutes and 55 seconds.
