What to Expect on the 1st Manta Ray Tour

As the sun lowers over Kona and the sky turns gold, the Hoku Nui departs Keauhou Bay for Manta Village — one of the most reliable manta ray viewing sites on Earth. The first departure captures the spectacular coastline views traveling out before the water darkens and the mantas arrive. The earlier return time makes this the ideal choice for families and guests who prefer to be back ashore early.

At Manta Village, many of our captains began as a deckhands on the Kona Coast and worked their way to the helm — As night falls our crew deploys custom underwater light boards that attract plankton. The manta rays then feed on the plankton. Guests float on the surface with flotation boards and watch mantas glide, somersault, and barrel roll just below them in the illuminated water. Sea Paradise captains log every manta sighting after each departure, building one of the most consistent sighting records on the Kona Coast.

Sea Paradise's 50-Foot Sailing Catamaran

The Hoku Nui — Hawaiian for “Big Star” — is a 50-foot luxury sailing catamaran spaciously designed for 49 guests. That means more deck space, easier water access, and a more relaxed atmosphere from departure to return.

Twin-hull sailing catamaran

Operating the Kona Coastline

Our catamaran’s wide twin-hull open design provides a comfortable and stable experience on the ocean, dramatically reducing the rolling motion that causes sea sickness. Guests who are typically sensitive on the water consistently report a comfortable experience aboard the Hoku Nui. The wide beam delivers more usable deck space: shaded seating, two oversized restrooms/changing rooms, a full galley, bar service, two freshwater showers, and two wide staircases for easier water entry.

Our USCG licensed captain’s aboard the Hoku Nui have extensive knowledge of the Kona Coast’s currents, reefs, and conditions and bring years of hands-on Kona ocean knowledge to every departure.

Manta Ray Etiquette

Sea Paradise follows all Manta Ray Tour Operator Guidelines and partners with Manta Ray Advocates Hawaii and the Manta Pacific Research Foundation. The reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Hawaii was the first U.S. state to legally protect manta rays, passing that law in 2009.

Touching

Never touch manta rays — contact removes their protective mucus layer and can cause lasting harm

No Camera Flash

Disable camera flash before entering the water — flash disorients mantas during feeding

Relax

Stay calm and horizontal on the surface — do not dive toward or chase the rays

Go slow in the water

Keep movements slow and deliberate — sudden motion disrupts natural feeding behavior

Passive observation only

Allow mantas to approach naturally — passive observation only

Quiet Voices

Keep voices low and share the moment with aloha

1st Manta Ray Tour FAQ

The 1st Manta Ray Tour (first departure) departs Keauhou Bay around sunset. Exact times shift seasonally as sunset times change throughout the year. Current departure times are listed at seaparadise.com. Check in 15 minutes before your scheduled departure at the end of the Keauhou Bay finger pier — not at any buildings.

Both tours visit Manta Village and follow the same snorkel format. The 1st Tour (first departure) leaves around sunset with golden-hour coastline views and an earlier nighttime return — it is the better choice for families with younger guests and those who prefer to be back ashore earlier in the evening. The 2nd Tour (second departure) departs at dark and offers a quieter, more intimate atmosphere under darker skies with fewer vessels at the viewing site. Both carry the same Manta Guarantee and sighting rates.

Sea Paradise’s manta ray sighting rates consistently run 85–95% on most nights of the year — among the highest reliable encounter rates for any wild animal experience in the world. Every Captain logs every sighting after each departure, tracking patterns across nights and seasons. The Manta Guarantee applies if mantas are not seen.

If manta rays are not seen on your departure, Sea Paradise will rebook you on a future manta tour at no additional charge, on a space-available basis. See our Manta Guarantee for full terms.

All snorkeling guests must be confident swimmers and comfortable floating on the surface in open ocean at night. The 1st Tour is the more accessible of the two manta departures and is well suited to guests who are new to night snorkeling. The crew does not teach swimming onboard. Guests who prefer not to enter the water are warmly welcome as Ride-Along observers.

Yes — as Ride-Along guests. Non-swimmers are warmly welcome to join the manta tour as Ride-Along observers, remaining on deck aboard the Hoku Nui. Ride-Along guests often see manta rays clearly from above the illuminated water and enjoy the full crew briefing, warm drinks, chocolate, and bar service. All guests must still review our Medical and Health Information and sign a release form (during the booking process) before boarding.

The Kona Coast is home to over 450 identified reef manta rays catalogued by Manta Ray Advocates Hawaii and the Manta Pacific Research Foundation using unique belly spot patterns. Famous residents include Lefty — the first Kona manta ever identified, in 1979, recognizable by her damaged left cephalic fin — Big Bertha, one of the largest females with an estimated 14–16 foot wingspan documented since 1991, Koie Ray, known for swimming boldly close to snorkelers, Jolene Ray, a petite regular at about 5 feet wide, and Obama Ray, originally named Barack Obama before being confirmed female. Quarantina, first spotted during the COVID pandemic, and Elvis are among other well-known residents. If you photograph an unidentified manta belly, you can submit it to the Manta Ray Tracker — and if it’s a new individual, you may earn the right to name it.

Warm drinks and chocolate are served after the snorkel on the return sail. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available.

Wear a swimsuit under comfortable clothing. Bring a towel, a light jacket or hoodie for the cooler return sail, and sandals or slip-ons (Sea Paradise operates shoe-less boats). All snorkel equipment including wetsuits is provided. Underwater cameras are welcome — disable any flash before entering the water. Shark Bands Are NOT Allowed as they may repel the manta rays.

Check in at the end of the finger pier at Keauhou Bay — end of Kaleiopapa Street, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. Do not check in at any buildings. Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled departure. Free parking is available along Kaleiopapa Street; allow 3–5 minutes to walk to the boat. Public restrooms are on the east side of Kaleiopapa Street near the parking lot. Restrooms/ Changing rooms are also onboard the Hoku Nui.

Awesome experience. This is the place to do a manta ray tour. We have done one before and in the other area where you see the manta rays. The short boat ride to the area is the way to go. Last time 30 mins ride. Koa boat captain and Eric the guide who was in the water with us was very knowledgeable and being in a smaller group is by far the way to go… if/when we make it back we will definitely book with Kona Mantas…

Seaquest did a phenomenal job for exploring The Big Island’s ocean. We did the night Manta Ray dive and the South Kona Expedition Snorkel tour. Such magical experiences. We saw nonstop Manta Rays. Even got several Manta Ray kisses. The South Kona Expedition Snorkel tour had 3 snorkel spots. Best snorkeling in all of the Islands Ive visited so far. The captains and guides are super friendly and knowledgeable. I know when I come back to the Big Island I will book from Seaquest again!

Had a great experience with the paradise crew and captain. They really go all out to make a memorable day out on the water. Today, a squall ran through halfway through the trip and we started heading back. But the conditions improved, and the boat resumed our snorkel trip after packing everything away. You can trust them. and a a great food spread too. Nice size boat and we never felt crowded. Choose these guys!

The catamaran snorkel tour was the highlight of our trip! Such a fun, friendly crew. One of the crew made mermaid bubbles in the water for my 6 year old niece. It was super cool! Our group of 13 enjoyed every minute of it.

These folks are the best! We did the Manta Ray night snorkel and then came back a couple days later for the Kealekekua Bay day snorkel catamaran. The team both times was super friendly, fun, knowledgeable and helpful. We had a blast, the boat was clean and comfortable, saw tons of amazing ocean life, and learned more about the beautiful creatures we share the world with and some interesting history about the area. Highly recommend Sea Paradise for anyone looking for a fantastic snorkeling experience.

Booked the night manta ray trip and it did NOT disappoint! We had SO many mantas under us as ALL times. There were about 11-12 different mantas swimming under us. The guides said they average about 3 a night so it was an extra special trip! Guides were super knowledgeable and #1 priority was the safety of the mantas and the guests. I get seasick VERY easily and I definitely was fighting it during the end of the trip but luckily less than a 5 min boat ride to and from the dock and they have ample ginger chews. This experience was truly a bucket list experience and Sea Paradise was a great company to do it with!!

We just got off the morning snorkeling trip and we had an amazing time. The entire crew was polite, professional and helpful in every way. They really made the trip fun and enjoyable. The boat was clean and well maintained with the cleanest bathrooms you will see on a charter boat. They had good snorkeling gear and the crew is right there ready to help you in any way you needed it to make sure you had a fun safe experience. Both the breakfast and lunch meals that come with the trip were delicious and beyond what I was expecting. The bartender can make some good drinks 🍹 for the ride home when the snorkeling is done.

One thing I did notice that Sea Paradise was doing that other boats around us weren’t doing. Sea Paradise puts crew members on paddle boards as lifeguards in the areas that you are swimming. That’s a big plus for safe in my eyes and I appreciate that.

Thank you again for the great time and great memories.

We enjoyed this morning snorkeling trip very much. The catamaran is nice (and it really does have the nicest bathrooms we've ever seen on a boat) and the crew is amazing. They're friendly, constantly offering food and drinks, and make sure everyone is well taken care of. They have everything you need for the trip, down to the reef safe sunscreen and hand sanitizer. The continental breakfast and coffee is nice in the morning, and we enjoyed the sandwich lunch after a couple of 45 minute snorkeling sessions. The snorkeling equipment is good and didn't leak like many do. The entire sail over and back is very pleasant. The snorkeling spots are fine, not the best we've seen, but had some decent fish. The drop off at Kealakekua Bay is cool to see. Overall, great experience well worth a morning.
