Sea Paradise Hawaii runs two manta ray departures every evening, and the question that comes up most at the pier is which one to book. What Is Actually Different Between the Two Departures?
The 1st Manta Ray Night Tour leaves as the sun sets, and the ocean darkens as you travel to Manta Village. The earlier return time makes this the ideal choice for families and guests who prefer to be back ashore early.
The 2nd Manta Ray Night Tour departs after full dark, which is why it runs shorter at roughly one and a half to under two hours.
Exact departure times shift through the year as the sun sets earlier or later, so your confirmation email carries your specific time.
Everything else is held constant. Both visit Manta Village just off Keauhou Bay. Both use the custom Manta Flotation Device. Both carry the same 85-95% sighting rate and the same Manta Guarantee. The in-water session runs about 45 minutes on either departure.

The early departure is especially popular with families and visitors who are still adjusting to Hawaiʻi’s time zone. Many guests find themselves waking up and getting tired earlier during the first few days of their vacation. The earlier tour also gets you back with time to pick up dinner afterward and enjoy the rest of your evening.
The later departure offers the same manta experience and likelihood of sightings, but there are typically fewer vessels on the water later in the evening. This can make it a great choice for guests who prefer a later start and potentially less boat traffic at the manta site.
Which One Is Right for Families and First-Time Snorkelers?
Either departure can be a great choice.
Both tours take place after dark and have the same swimming, snorkeling and participation requirements. Guests entering the water must be at least six years old, have confident swimming and snorkeling skills, and have reviewed the medical questionnaire, obtaining physician approval beforehand if any answer is yes.
Our crew provides a complete safety and snorkel briefing before entering the water, but guests must already know how to swim and be comfortable snorkeling in deep, open-ocean water. Non-swimmers may not enter the water.
For families, the early departure is often more convenient simply because of the timing — especially for younger children or guests whose internal clocks are still on mainland time.
For guests who prefer to stay dry, Ride-Along tickets are available for ages four and older with adult supervision. Ride-Along guests can remain aboard and enjoy the experience from the vessel while watching the illuminated water and manta activity below. No one under the age of 4 is permitted on the manta ray tours.
Ultimately, you don’t need to choose between a “better” manta tour — both departures provide the same opportunity for an unforgettable manta encounter. Choose the departure time that works best for your evening.
What Should You Know Before Either Departure?
Check-in is 15 minutes before departure at the end of the Keauhou Bay finger pier, at the end of Kaleiopapa Street, Kailua-Kona. Crew in blue shirts. Not at any of the buildings.
Wetsuit, mask, snorkel, the custom Manta Flotation Device, warm drinks and chocolates are included on both tours. Bring a towel and a light jacket for the cooler return, and sandals — the Hoku Nui is a shoe-less vessel.
Two things are not allowed in the water. Camera flash disorients feeding mantas, so it must be disabled. Shark bands are also prohibited, because they may repel the mantas you came to see. Neck lanyards for phones are not permitted either.
The etiquette is simple and it is the reason this site still works after five decades: never touch a manta, stay horizontal and still on the surface, never dive down toward them or swim after them, and let them approach on their own terms. The reef manta ray, Mobula alfredi, is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Hawaii was the first US state to legally protect manta rays, in 2009.
