Kona’s manta ray encounters became famous because reef manta rays learned to take advantage of concentrated plankton around artificial lights.
The concept is beautifully simple.
Light attracts plankton.
Plankton attracts mantas.
And the mantas put on a performance that no choreographer could reproduce.
They aren’t performing for people, of course. They’re feeding.
Their graceful movements are a natural consequence of following concentrations of plankton through the water.
